Gaming is more popular than ever! From video games to wargaming and miniatures, it’s very chic to be geek nowadays. Good thing, too, because now board games have been making their glorious re-appearance in the form of fresh ideas that go beyond the classics.
But what if you’re new to this whole board game scene? What games should you start with? I’ve comprised a short list of some games that are easy-to-learn, fun, and generally don’t take too long to complete a game. This is NOT a comprehensive list, as there are a ton of amazing games out there, but these are a few of my favorites. Your kids can even join in if they’re old enough to understand more complex rules!

1. Red Dragon Inn
Red Dragon Inn is a great choice for any board game n00b! It’s a fun “drinking” game that goes quickly, only needs 2 people to get started (though expansion packs accompany several players!), and you can choose between awesome characters that have their own special abilities! Play it with friends who have a sense of humor, though: this game gets cutthroat quick!
You and your adventuring companions have spent all day slogging through the Dungeon, killing monsters and taking their stuff. Now you’re back in town, healed up, cleaned up, and ready to party at the Red Dragon Inn. Drink, gamble, and roughhouse with your friends. But don’t forget to keep an eye on your Gold. If you run out, you’ll have to spend the night in the stables. Oh. and try not to get too beaten up or too drunk. If you black out, your friends will continue the party without you. after they loot your body for Gold of course! The last conscious adventurer with Gold wins the game! Take on the role of one of four heroic fantasy adventurers — Dierdre, Fiona, Gerki, or Zot — and enjoy an evening at the Red Dragon Inn!
Don’t let this one get away—it’s really a must in any game collection!
2. Battle Wizards
If you want to talk about an awesome game, then be prepared to talk about Battle Wizards! Sassy, magical, and irreverent, if you have a dark sense of humor and like destroying your friends with uncontrollable diarrhea, then this is the game for you. The rules are simple: create a magic spell to inflict the greatest damage and be the last one standing!
Did you know that magical wizards are battling to the death . and beyond . right now!? “Why battle?” you might ask. “What have I got to prove, magic man?” Only who’s the most awesomely powerful battle wizard in the entire realm, that’s what! As a Battle Wizard, you’ll put together up to three spell components to craft millions of spell combos. Your spells might kick ass, or they could totally blow — it’s up to you to master the magic. You will unleash massive damage on the faces of your wizard rivals in a no-holds-barred, all-out burn-down to be the last Battle Wizard standing. And it doesn’t stop there! Powerful magic items bring on a whole new level of bloody carnage as you and your mighty wizard opponents tear each other limb from limb in an orgy of killing! Do you have what it takes to use epic spells in a war at Mt. Skullzfyre? Will YOU be the Ultimate Battle Wizard!?! – Combine spell cards into three-piece combos, creating hundreds of unique and devastating attacks. The chaos is limited only by your thirst for destruction!
No matter your experience level, Battle Wizards is a game that doesn’t disappoint!
Undoubtedly regarded as a classic, Munchkin is a great way to get your gaming sea legs! In some ways, you could say this is the game that started the snark! It’s extremely easy to set up and get going, and it’s super kid-friendly, too. One of my favorite aspects of Munchkin is just how many variations exist, from monsters to superheros and more, you can find your flavor—or mix and match to create your perfect game!
Includes 168 cards, 6 standies, 6 player cards, gameboard, rules, and die. What makes this edition “deluxe”?
